For police departments, participation in INTERAC training is a step towards enhancing their officers’ ability to interact with individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities. INTERAC, short for “Interaction with Neurodiverse Citizens: Training on Effective Response and Communication,” is a specialized training program designed to equip law enforcement personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle encounters involving individuals with autism and/or intellectual disabilities. This training is invaluable in fostering better communication, empathy and de-escalation techniques when officers encounter individuals who may respond differently to law enforcement interactions due to their unique cognitive or sensory processing challenges.
